SREBRENICA 1995-2005

1995. Srebrenica. More than 8000 civilians, mostly men, were slaughtered within just three days.

Galerija 10m2 considers that art is about politics as much as it is about aesthetics, and that as a consequence art will not be consensual. Ten years
after the slaughter, Galerija 10m2 therefore decided to join the families, and indeed a whole people, in their mournful commemorations by paying a discreet and respectful homage to the victims in the form of a collective work. The names of all the dead who have been listed to this day were copied by hand by forty or so friends on large sheets of white paper. The sheets
were then presented on the gallery windows, a cover was put over the gallery sign and the patrons' logos were taken off the widows: a fragile and fleeting paper memorial, on which the hand-writings stood for the painful remembrance of those now dead and gone. The curves of each letter echoed thoughts about absence, the obsessive repetition echoing the unthinkable atrocity of a carefully planned genocide, echoing the undeniable responsibility of the international community, and strove, by naming the dead, to give back to them their dignity as humans.

Dix ans après, la galerija 10m2, qui considère que l'art est autant un travail esthétique que politique, et par là même, non consensuel, décide avec respect et modestie de s'associer aux commémorations des familles et de tout un peuple, en rendant, à travers la réalisation d'une oeuvre collective, un hommage aux victimes. Les noms de tous les défunts recensés à ce jour ont ainsi été recopiés à la main sur de grandes planches de papier par une quarantaine d'amis. L'ensemble a été ensuite présentée à la galerie, l'enseigne bâchée et les logos sur la vitre retirés. Fragile et fugace mémorial de papier où l'écriture incarne la prise de conscience douloureuse des disparus, la gestuelle d'une pensée de l'absence, qui dans son inlassable répétition nous renvoie à l'insoutenable atrocité d'un génocide programmée, à l'indéniable responsablilité de la communauté internationale, mais qui surtout, en les
nommant, tente de rendre aux morts leurs dignités d'homme.
