«Giorgio Morandi» Department Store

28-02-2015 / 14-03-2015

Welcome to the “Giorgio Morandi Department Store”, where everything is for sale!

Developing on from the exhibition “Property of Emptiness” in Zagreb in December 2014, Jusuf Hadžifejzović has now re-calibrated and extended his vision for this new show in duplex.

In 1912, Picasso made a guitar from cardboard and wire, and dreamed of his sculpture entering mass production, bringing contemporary art within the reach of everybody. Five years later, Duchamp’s urinal, bringing an everyday object into the gallery space, subverting its original function and endowing it with the fine art exclusivity”, developed the hotly contested dialogue between artist, idea, public and object.

The installations we have here may have their origins in these debates from a century ago, but develop reist, painterly, and performative aspects. Reism- a philosophy giving primacy to material things, with a belief that no one thing is more significant than the other- was first explored in the ex-Yugoslav context by the Slovenian performance group OHO, in the late 1960s.

But “reism” here is defined by an intense relationship with the still life object; the belief that each object- no matter how insignificant it may seem- has its own personal story and significance, its own link with time past, and biographical detail. The empty material packages collected have all been bought and consumed by the artist over a brief period; cigarettes, toiletries, cans of food, alcohol, perfume, medicines. They are markers of brief moments of intense consumption, and a desire to re-emphasise the human aspect and human processes in an era of hyper-materialism.

To do so, Jusuf returns to the example of a painter he reveres: the Italian still life artist, Giorgio Morandi, for whom this pop-up department store is named. Morandi had a similarly intense relationship with everyday objects in a different set of material circumstances; he systematically turned over their forms, compositionally and technically, as a means of reflecting on their significance as objects. Jusuf takes this approach further, examining these objects as dramatic props in a particular biographical context.

All here is for sale. In so doing, the artist parodies the processes of consumption in late capitalism; instead of an insincerely “personal” approach to oblige consumers to make a purchase, in this department store, you are purchasing the markers of a particular moment in this artist’s life. In so doing, a deeply personal and unique relationship is formed between artist, consumer, and object; the scattering of the material archive of a life amongst a thousand new contexts.
